Reading- Chapter 5 ~Visual literacy for all teachers and learners~

This reading focuses on visual literacy and what visual literacy is. Visual literacy represents a verify of approaches to teaching, learning and assessment that stems from pictures, drawings, photographs, concept maps, graphics, videos and multimedia. Throughout the chapter it mentions visual literacy in the 21st century, and how it has changed over the years. It helps to engage students and makes it fun and enjoyable. It explains that it takes on average 15 minutes to read and score complex essays and on average 1.5-2 minutes to read and score concept maps.

Visual literacy is the ability to interpret, negotiate, and make meaning from information presented in the form of an image, extending the meaning of literacy, which commonly signifies interpretation of a written or printed text.

mind map is a diagram used to visually organise information. A mind map is often created around a single concept, drawn as an image in the center of a blank landscape page, to which associated representations of ideas such as images, words and parts of words are added.

A Venn diagram is a diagram representing mathematical or logical sets pictorially as circles or closed curves within an enclosing rectangle (the universal set), common elements of the sets being represented by intersections of the circles.

concept map is a type of graphic organiser used to help students organise and represent knowledge of a subject. Concept maps begin with a main idea (or concept) and then branch out to show how that main idea can be broken down into specific topics.

Week 7 Reflection

Its our second week into Digital technology. I am actually very confused as to what is needed for assessment task 2, we did discuss this in class and i got a better understanding, but i think I’m going to find it hard as for assessment task B we are writing another reflection on our blogs, explaining our knowledge and what we have learnt about digital technology. I find this quite unfair as we had 5-6 weeks to learn about design technology and only 2-3 weeks on digital technology. Im sure i will be fine but by having only 2 weeks to learn all the material is quite frustrating. In this weeks class we learnt all about coding. I still have no idea how to do this, and i don’t believe i would use this in my classroom as a teacher, its complicated and confusing. Coding might come in handy in the future but i hope by then i understand the concept of coding.

Computational thinking and Coding

This week we had to make a grid in word and write instructions on how to make the grid. This was quite confusing at first but after about 2-3 minutes of figuring it out, it was easy.

Computational thinking is a way of solving problems, designing systems, and understanding human behavior that draws on concepts fundamental to computer science.

An algorithm is a procedure or formula for solving a problem.

In class this week we used a few coding programs, i used the Code Monster. i found this very difficult to understand. It was just too complicated, the program didn’t make sense. i did sit there and try to figure it out with a few people on my table, but we just gave up in the end.

Also today in class we played a little game on the internet where we had to identify the internal parts of a computer. i had a few tries of this and in the end i got most of them right. It was quite difficult and i would not use this program in my classroom.

Assignment 1: Final blog reflection weeks 1-5

I Began this design and digital technology course feeling pretty confident in being able to succeed as I know a lot about technology, (phones, computers, television, iPods, iPads etc.) I have a good understanding on how to work these electronics and how to use them. At first I didn’t know the difference between digital and design technology. First week was a breeze, but second week blew my mind! I had no clue what was wanted from me. I found it very difficult to understand and take information in. there was so much material that I needed to learn and evaluate that I got so lost and agitated.

It is easy to say that I did not know anything when it came to design technology. I have learnt a lot in the last couple of weeks, I have learnt how to make a concept map, a wiki, a blog, QR codes, twitter, etc. My favourite was the blog. I really enjoyed designing a blog I had so much fun with the blog. I could even say that I would make my own personal blog. I loved it! By having a blog in a way I had to have a responsibility, I had to update my blog daily/weekly, it allowed me a chance to reflect on new skills and what I had learnt throughout the week. I found it fun and enjoyable. What I found the hardest was the wiki. Not only myself, but my group members found it very difficult as well. To this day I still have a hard time doing my wiki, its not fun its hard. I find it hard to figure out a purpose for these wiki’s as to why primary school aged children will need to use them. If my university class found it hard then wouldn’t primary school children find it so much more difficult? I didn’t pay much attention to my wiki as it made everything so complicated. I also had trouble getting things to upload on to my wiki page.

My groups design challenge was to make a healthy sandwich. At first we thought this would be quite easy but as we got more into the design challenge we got told that what we were doing was wrong. We all had to restart with so many questions and not enough answers. We all pretty much ended up with the same design cycle, because we had to many technical difficulties with members of the group not being able to log into the wiki, others not being able to upload information, etc. I ended up turning away from my wiki and having nothing to do with it, because it frustrated me more than anything! I am still not confident and happy with what I have produced on my wiki for our design challenge, I feel as if iv let my team down as well as myself, but I just couldn’t wrap my head around what was needed of me.

Throughout this subject I have learnt a lot, with all the material and information on the subject I expected to learn so much more. I feel as if it was all rushed in together too quickly and because there was so much information we didn’t learn as much as we could of because it was so full on. I feel as if the digital technology course will be the same. I did find some of the materials we used and created quite helpful to me for when I teach primary school children, but other materials we used and created where absolutely useless. I now understand the meaning of design technology with help from the curriculum and course materials provided. This course has allowed me to understand and generate different tools and many ways technology can be used in a classroom. It has opened my eyes about what technology really is. I believe that I will get a lot of use out of this course in my future of primary school teaching.

Binary card game

I chose a game where you have a number of different boards full of numbers. Ask someone to think of a number. They should find all the cards with that number on, and give them to you. All you need do is add up the top left hand number on each of these cards. This will be the number they chose. This game is quite simple, but fun and amusing at the same time. At first this game reminded me a little bit of ‘Bingo’ but it is completely different by the time you realise how to play. i actually don’t know how this game has anything to with Binary codes, but i searched ‘Binary code games’ into google and this is what came up.

Infographics on Binary Code


Today we had to create a infographic on binary codes. at first this seemed quite difficult with all the themes. but after clicking on one and starting it from scratch i found it quite easy to put in the information about Binary codes. A binary code is representation of data, a code for how computers work. Binary codes can be translated into a decimal number. I had no idea what a binary code was and now i have a small idea on what it is and what it is used for. But i still have no idea how to use the binary codes. hopefully i can play some of the binary code games and figure out how to use it.

Week 6 Reflection

This week in class we talked more about the assignment and what was needed from us. I fully understand what i need to do for the assignment so I’m happy to know what I’m doing. We focused on Binary codes. i still have no idea how to use binary codes, i do have an understanding of what it is and what it is used for, but no idea on how to use it. we had to make a infographic on Binary codes, this was quite fun and challenging at the same time. we also had to choose a game to play and reflect on, i chose a binary card game. i played this with my friend next to me and we had a lot of fun trying to figure out how the computer got the answers. We are now focusing on Digital technologies. Digital technologies is used to describe the use of digital resources to effectively find, create , analyse, communicate and use information in a digital context.
